Augmentiverse reference / Technologies
Spatial anchoring
Keeping digital content connected to a physical place.
Overview
An anchor associates digital content with a tracked spatial reference. Persistence extends that relationship beyond a single session; sharing requires other devices to recover a compatible reference.
Foundational Role in the framework
Role in the Augmentiverse
Anchoring operationalises persistent spatial presence. A durable content service also needs discovery, access control, versioning and maintenance of the underlying spatial map.
How it works
A device saves a pose relative to visual features, mapped geometry or a geographic frame. In a later session, localisation estimates the current device’s relationship to that saved reference.
Core components
- Localisation and map data
- Anchor identifiers and poses
- Storage and discovery
- Sharing and permissions
What it enables
- A digital annotation can be revisited in place.
- Multiple users can coordinate around the same object.
Where it is useful
- Museum interpretation
- Persistent maintenance annotations
Limits and implementation choices
- Feature changes and localisation error can misalign content.
- Proprietary cloud anchors are not universally portable.
- Geographic position alone does not provide precise indoor registration.
