Overview

Edge computing places processing nearer to devices or data sources than a remote central cloud. Multi-access Edge Computing provides an ETSI architectural context for services at the network edge.

Complementary Role in the framework

Role in the Augmentiverse

Some spatial workloads can use nearby services for shared state, media or inference. Local tracking should remain robust when connectivity degrades.

How it works

Applications divide work between the device, edge services and central services. Placement decisions depend on network conditions, privacy, workload and operational constraints.

Core components

  • On-device processing
  • Nearby compute services
  • Service discovery
  • Network and lifecycle management

What it enables

  • Some workloads can reduce network travel and device load.
  • Local aggregation can support shared spatial services.

Where it is useful

  • Shared operational state
  • Offloaded media and inference

Limits and implementation choices

  • Edge placement does not guarantee a particular end-to-end latency.
  • Availability, migration and data governance add complexity.
