Decentralized Identifiers
Identifiers whose control can be independently verified.
Overview
A DID identifies a subject and resolves, through a DID method, to information such as verification methods and services. Different methods make different governance and infrastructure choices.

Role in the Augmentiverse
DIDs are one possible building block for portable authorship and identity. The framework’s interoperability goal does not require a blockchain or one universal identity provider.
Where it is useful
- Verifiable content authorship
- Portable identifiers for people or assets
Limits and implementation choices
- A DID is not proof that a claim is true or that its subject is trustworthy.
- Privacy, recovery and interoperability depend on method and application design.
