Overview

IoT connects sensing and actuation in physical objects to software services. In a spatial application, measurements become useful when they can be associated with the correct asset, place and time.

Complementary Role in the framework

Role in the Augmentiverse

IoT supplies changing real-world information for digital twins and contextual AR. It is an optional integration layer rather than a defining commitment.

How it works

Sensors produce observations, gateways or networks transport them, and services relate them to devices and assets. Applications must account for timestamps, units, identity and data quality.

Core components

  • Sensors and actuators
  • Connectivity and gateways
  • Device identity
  • Data services

What it enables

  • Physical changes can become visible in spatial interfaces.
  • Observations can inform contextual alerts and maintenance.

Where it is useful

  • Equipment monitoring
  • Environmental information in cities

Limits and implementation choices

  • Insecure devices and poorly governed data increase risk.
  • A connection does not establish reliable semantics or timely delivery.
