Overview

5G supplies a family of mobile network capabilities. IMT-2030 sets the ITU framework for the next generation, commonly called 6G. A future capability framework should not be confused with a deployed service or a performance guarantee.

Peripheral / prospective Role in the framework

Role in the Augmentiverse

Mobile networks can connect distributed spatial services. Wi-Fi and local operation can also support AR; neither 5G nor 6G defines the framework.

How it works

Radio access and core networks transport data between devices and services. Network conditions and application design determine the experienced responsiveness.

Core components

  • Radio access network
  • Core and transport network
  • Device radio
  • Application and edge services

What it enables

  • Connectivity supports shared state beyond a single room.
  • Network evolution may support more demanding distributed workloads.

Where it is useful

  • Connected field operations
  • Research on distributed spatial services

Limits and implementation choices

  • Coverage, congestion and device support vary.
  • IMT-2030 objectives are prospective; commercial outcomes are not established.
